Safety Precautions

1.        Choose the proper sized rope for your height. The rope should be long enough to touch
your armpits when stepping on it with two feet.
2.        Five minutes of stretching exercises should be performed before beginning rope jumping
activities.
3.        Ensure adequate spacing is provided between students to prevent accidental contact.
4.        Proper footwear should include shoes that are cushioned, fit snugly and provide good
support.

Exercise Guidelines and Tips

1.        Hold the handles of the jump rope loosely. Thumb and index fingers are used to control the
rope.
2.        Use wrist and forearm action to turn the jump rope from waist level.
3.        Rope jumping is a low-impact form of exercise. Jumping should be done on the balls of the
feet coupled with a soft landing.
4.        Practice good rope jumping form. Jump height should only be about 1 inch off the ground.
5.        Look straight ahead when rope jumping. Maintaining good erect posture is also very
important.
6.        Don’t become discouraged when attempting new techniques. Rope jumping skills develop
over time as confidence builds.
7.        Add music to rope jumping units. Music provides natural rhythms and beats in which to
jump rope.
8.        Increase duration of jump rope exercises until 12-15 minutes of rope jumping can be
achieved every other day.
